Discover the edible and medicinal plants which grow locally and finish with a cup for of a locally grown and harvested herbal tea blend.
Come and explore the unique environment of Whitehawk Hill/ causeway, with its mix of grass and small woods growing on the chalky downlands of East Sussex. Meet the plants and learn their stories.
Whitehawk Hill, was the home of a neolithic tribe who lived, farmed and looked after this settlement. “These Neolithic people lived on the high grounds of Whitehawk Hill near the Brighton Race Course. They belonged to a race of small-boned, dark-complexioned individuals, a tribe residing in Brighton, Sussex.” (Brighton & Hove Black History Project).
I am grateful to these folk and those who have come after for the variety of medicinal plants and wild flowers that grow here. Many of these plants are hidden close to the ground, whilst others are more obvious within the landscape. There is always something to see and appreciate in the different seasons throughout the year. As well as small trees and shrubs which thrive in this exposed environment there are magnificent views out to sea and the downs. Nearby is Craven Wood which has been cultivated over the last century and is currently looked after by volunteers and the friends of Craven Woods. Within the woods are a mixture of medicinal plants and trees that support a diverse mix of insects and creatures. Both the downs and the woods are a much appreciated space within our urban environment.
Walk with me to discover and identify the plants, hear their stories and be able to find them again near to where you live. Looking at the ground will never be the same again.
